The Box is Richard Kelly’s follow-up to a steaming pile called Southland Tales, but this one actually looks pretty good. It’s the story of a family struggling to pay their bills when a stranger appears with a proposition straight out of the Twilight Zone. That stranger is Frank Langella and whatever happened to his face is reason enough to not let him into your house, but that wouldn’t make for an interesting story. The proposition is simple: Press the button and get one million dollars in cash. The catch: Someone that you don’t know will die. For me, this is where the line between fiction and reality is the most distant. As soon as Frank said he’ll give me a million bucks for pressing a simple, little button, I would have slammed that thing so hard and fast that it would have been impossible for him to tell me the consequence of my action. Then there would be no guilt, and no taxes (it’s cash after all). Trailer, cast and synopsis after the jump!
From Wiki:
The plot is set in Richmond, Virginia in the year 1976. An unhappily married couple (Diaz and Marsden) receive a box from a mysterious stranger (Langella), who tells them that pushing a button on the box will award them with a large monetary sum, and simultaneously, someone the couple does not know, will die.
The Cast:
- Cameron Diaz – Norma Lewis
- James Marsden – Arthur Lewis
- Frank Langella – Arlington Steward
- Gillian Jacobs – Dana Steward
- James Rebhorn
Apparently this thing is based on a Richard Matheson short called Button, Button first published by Playboy Magazine in 1970. And it was actually a Twilight Zone episode.
