It won’t be released until March 5, 2010, but these images should get people excited. I’m surprised Tim Burton didn’t opt for the title of the novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, as he did for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I guess that probably has something to do with Disney being behind it. That aside, the visuals, as seen here, are and will be amazing. More pics (including Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter) after the jump.

The cast is as eclectic as any Tim Burton film ever made:
- Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter
- Anne Hathaway as The White Queen
- Michael Sheen as The White Rabbit
- Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen
- Alan Rickman as The Caterpillar
- Christopher Lee as The Jabberwock
- Stephen Fry as The Cheshire Cat
- Crispin Glover as The Knave of Hearts
- Mia Wasikowska as Alice Kingsley

Just a little fyi… Tweedledum and Tweedledee (and The Jabberwock) are not characters in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. They actually only appear in the sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, but are often included in the Alice in Wonderland film versions.

The Hatter is a fictional character initially encountered at a tea party and later again as “Hatta” in the story’s sequel, Through the Looking-Glass. He is popularly referred to as “The Mad Hatter,” but is never called by this name in Carroll’s book – although the Cheshire Cat does warn Alice that he is mad, and the Hatter’s eccentric behavior supports this.

With a motif of Through the Looking-Glass being representations of the game of chess, the Red Queen could be viewed as an antagonist in the story as she is the queen for the side opposing Alice. Despite this, their initial encounter is a cordial one, with the Red Queen explaining the rules of Chess concerning promotion — specifically that Alice is able to become a queen by starting out as a pawn and reaching the eighth square at the opposite end of the board. As a queen in the game of Chess, the Red Queen is able to move swiftly and effortlessly.
