1941 is a period comedy film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by friends Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale. It starred John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd and premiered in December 1979. The film is a comedy about a panic in the Los Angeles area that occurs after the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

Although it was not as financially or critically successful as Spielberg’s previous (and later) films, it received belated recognition after being aired on ABC in an expanded version, and its subsequent successful home video reissues, raising the movie to a cult status.

Co-writer Bob Gale stated the plot is loosely based on an incident that has come to be known as the West Coast air raid or Great Los Angeles Air Raid of 1942 as well as the shelling of the Ellwood oil refinery, near Santa Barbara by a Japanese submarine. Many of the other events in the movie were based on real incidents, including the Zoot Suit Riots and an incident where the army really did put an anti-aircraft gun in the yard of a homeowner on the coast (in Maine).

16 Blocks is a 2006 film directed by Richard Donner and released by Warner Bros. It was released in the United States on March 3, 2006. The main characters are played by Bruce Willis, Mos Def, and David Morse. The film is shot in the “real time” narration method. The film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA for “violence, intense sequences of action, and some strong language.”

The plot holds a strong resemblance to the story of the Clint Eastwood film The Gauntlet (also from Warner Brothers,) with both films being about an alcoholic detective escorting a loud-mouthed witness, only to find that the city’s police force want said witness dead. Both films end with the protagonists driving a city bus through a gauntlet of police officers.

The 13th Warrior is a 1999 action film based on the novel Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton. It is directed by John McTiernan and an uncredited Crichton, and stars Antonio Banderas as Ahmad ibn Fadlan and Vladimir Kulich as Buliwyf.
The 13th Warrior was a disappointment at the box office, earning only US $61,698,899 worldwide.

The novel upon which the film is based is itself loosely inspired by Richard Frye’s translation of ibn Fadlan’s non-fictional account of his travels up the river Volga in the tenth century and the Old English heroic epic poem, Beowulf.

12 Angry Men is a 1957 American drama film adapted from a play by Reginald Rose. Directed by Sidney Lumet, the film tells the story of a jury made up of 12 men as they deliberate the guilt or innocence of a defendant on the basis of reasonable doubt. The film is notable for its almost exclusive use of one set: with the exception of two short scenes at the beginning and the end of the film set on the steps of the court building and two short scenes in an adjoining washroom, the entire movie takes place in the jury room.

Apart from two of the jurors swapping names while leaving the courthouse, no names are used in the film: the defendant is referred to as “the boy” and the witnesses as the “old man” and “the lady across the street”.
In 2007, 12 Angry Men was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

In the year 10,000 BC, a tribe of hunter-gatherers called the Yagahl, who live on a remote mountain range, survive by killing mammoths. D’Leh, a young hunter, has a companion named Evolet, an orphan who was found by the tribe. D’Leh, while hunting mammoths, manages to kill one and wins the “White Spear,” which is given to the killer of the mammoth. He also wins Evolet in marriage, but feels he deserves neither since he killed the mammoth by accident.

One day, D’Leh and several others are away when horse-raiders called the “Four Legged Demons” attack the Yaghal camp. The horse raiders enslave Evolet, and D’Leh, Tic’Tic, and Ka’Ren pursue them to save her. Baku, whose mother was killed during the raid, joins them later. They are attacked by terror birds in the jungle, along with the raiders. In this encounter, Tic’Tic gets wounded and Baku and Ka’Ren are captured. D’Leh rescues Evolet, but she is later re-captured. Continuing on, they meet others whose loved ones were taken by the raiders. D’Leh and Tic’Tic befriend Nakudu, leader of the Naku tribe. He tells D’Leh of a prophecy: whoever talks to the “Spear-Tooth” will help free their people. D’Leh had earlier saved a saber-toothed cat from drowning in a trap. The saber-tooth then spared his life, and he realizes the prophecy was about him. Nakudu explains that his loved ones were taken in the “Great Red Birds,” or ships with large red sails, to the “Mountains of the Gods,” from which no one has ever returned. They then come together with other tribes, who agree to form a coalition to pursue the raiders.

They find the ships with red sails holding Evolet and Baku. They have no means to follow the ships, so they journey through a vast desert, where they discover a relatively advanced civilization similar to ancient Egypt, which is ruled by an enigmatic figure known as “The Almighty,” who is said to be the last survivor of his kind. The Almighty, who is regarded as a living god, possesses many thousands of slaves that he is using to build a huge pyramid complex in his honor and possibly for his burial. D’Leh finds an escaped slave, and notices he is wearing a bracelet worn by D’Leh’s father. D’Leh’s father left his tribe for food and found the Naku tribe before being stolen by the raiders. In a night attack, the guards of the slaves discover D’Leh behind a pyramid. Tic’Tic dies during the attack. Meanwhile, the Almighty’s priests discover Evolet wears scars on her hand patterned after the “Mark of the Hunter,” the brightest star in all of the heavens. The priests believe it is part of a prophecy that whoever wears the mark of the Hunter is destined to kill the Almighty. D’Leh starts a full-scale rebellion amongst the slaves. They cause the mammoth herd to stampede and kill a large number of troops.

The Almighty offers Evolet to D’Leh in exchange for abandoning his rebellion. The Almighty says that if D’Leh takes his wife, his warriors can return, but the rest must be his slaves forever. D’Leh feigns acceptance of the deal which allows him to throw a spear at the Almighty and kill him, proving that he is not a god. During the ensuing battle, a raider kidnaps Evolet on horseback. Evolet grabs an arrow and stabs the warlord in the side, knocking them both off the horse. D’Leh rushes towards her, but the raider shoots her in the back. D’Leh kills the raider and returns to Evolet, and she dies in his arms. The scene shifts to the wise woman as she breathes in deeply and then breathes out her last breath. The scene then returns to D’Leh still holding Evolet’s body when she suddenly awakens, restored by the wise woman’s sacrifice. They depart for home and bid farewell to the other tribes. They return home and kiss passionately as the screen fades in the sun.

In an alternative ending, the scene shifts forward many years into the future, showing Baku’s retelling of the story by the camp fire. It ends with a child asking what had happened to the “Mountains of the Gods,” and Baku responds “They were taken back by the sands. Lost to time, lost to man.”

Here is the popular Rat Pack Pool Poster from the original Ocean’s Eleven movie with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Sammy Davis Jr. This is the sixties version of the Rat Pack (I was unaware the 50s version had Humphrey Bogart as chief, not Sinatra) on the set of the famous 1960 heist film that sparked the clever 2001 Clooney / Pitt remake of the same name.

Ocean’s Eleven (or Ocean’s 11) is a 1960 heist film directed by Lewis Milestone and starring five Rat Packers: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford.

Centered around a series of Las Vegas casino robberies, the film’s other stars included Angie Dickinson, Cesar Romero, Richard Conte, Akim Tamiroff, Henry Silva, Ilka Chase, Norman Fell, Harry Wilson, and Buddy Lester, as well as cameo appearances by Shirley MacLaine, Red Skelton, and George Raft.

A gang of ten World War II 82nd Airborne veterans led by Danny Ocean (Sinatra) rob five different Las Vegas casinos (Sands, Desert Inn, Flamingo, Riviera, and Sahara) on a single night.

The gang plans the elaborate New Year’s Eve heist with the precision of a military operation. Josh (Davis) takes a job driving a garbage truck while others work to scope out the various casinos. Demolition charges are planted on an electrical transmission tower and the backup electrical systems are covertly rewired in each casino.

At exactly midnight, while everyone in every Vegas casino is singing “Auld Lang Syne” the tower is blown up, Vegas goes dark. The backup electrical systems open the cashier cages instead of powering the emergency lights. The inside men sneak into the cashier cages and collect the money. They dump the bags of loot into hotel garbage bins, go back inside and mingle with the crowds. As soon as the lights come back on, the thieves stroll out of the casinos. A garbage truck driven by Josh picks up the bags and passes through the police blockade. It appears to have gone off without a hitch.
Anthony “Tony” Bergdorf (Conte), however, has a heart attack in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip and dies. Reformed gangster Duke Santos (Romero) offers to recover the casino bosses’ money for a price. He learns of Danny Ocean and his connection to his fiancée’s son, Jimmy Foster (Lawford), both of whom he knows to be in Vegas at the moment. Santos pieces together the puzzle by the time Bergdorf’s body arrives at the mortician.

Santos confronts the thieves, demanding half of their take. In desperation, they hide the money in Bergdorf’s coffin, setting aside $10,000 for the widow. The group plans to take back the rest of the money, and make no payoff to Santos, after the coffin is shipped to San Francisco. Alas, this plan backfires when the funeral home talks the widow (Jean Willes) into having the funeral in Las Vegas, where the body (with coffin) is cremated.

Spyros Acebos: Who’s knocking him? I love him. I respect talent. All I’m asking is he should me a little.
‘Curly’ Steffens: Too tough. Don’ ask.

Vince Massler: If it’s so fool-proof, why hasn’t somebody done it yet.
Danny Ocean: Same reason nobody’s gone to the moon yet – no equipment.
Jimmy Foster: And we’re equipped.

Vince Massler: I can’t do it. I’ve got my wife to think of.
Danny Ocean: Think of her rich.
Vince Massler: Think of me dead.

Josh Howard: Look Vince – the brave ones don’t come home. You stay scared.
Vince Massler: Yeah. You were always one of those guys who didn’t want any brave ones on patrol with you, weren’t you?
Josh Howard: It’s simple enough – in my book “brave” rhymes with “stupid”, and it still does.

Josh Howard: They way I figure it is like this: the eleven of us cats against this one city…?

Beatrice Ocean: [to Sam Harmon] I’ll consider mistress, plaything, toy for a night, but I refuse to be your mother. That’s out!

Beatrice Ocean: [to Danny Oceans] Oh, Danny. What a prize you are. The only husband in the world who’d proposition his own wife.

Jimmy Foster: Mother, I have never missed one of your weddings.
Mrs. Restes: Yes, you did. My first one.

Sam Harmon: The odds are always with the house,
