The music in (500) Days of Summer is getting a bit of attention these days, with music from Simon and Garfunkel, Hall and Oates, The Smiths, Regina Spektor, Meaghan Smith and a beautiful cover of The Smith’s “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want” by Zooey Deschanel’s band She & Him.

The 500 Days of Summer soundtrack fits perfectly against the story of Tom (Joseph-Gordon Levitt) falling in and out of love with the free-spirited Summer (Zooey Deschanel). Opening with the colorful instrumental track, “A Story of Boy Meets Girl,” and fades into Regina Spektor’s “Us.” The Smith’s “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out” is perhaps most recognizable from the elevator scene when Summer channels Morrisey and sings “to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die.” “Bad Kids” by The Black Lips is an up-beat, pop tune and is followed by the poignant “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want.” The Coldplay-eque “There Goes the Fear” by Doves is followed by the 80s super hit “You Make My Dreams” by Hall & Oates. The Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition” is followed by The First Lady of France Carla Bruni’s “Quelqu’un M’a Dit.” Who knew a Nicolas Sarkozy’s wife was a singer? Feist squeezes her way into the (500) Days of Summer soundtrack with “Mushaboom” from her 2004 album Let It Die followed by Regina Spektor’s “Hero.” They chose to include “Bookends” by Simon & Garfunkel, though it is nowhere to be found on The Graduate soundtrack (go see the movie). Wolfmother rocks out with the hypnotizing and dynamic “Vagabonds” followed by Mumm-Ra’s “She’s Got You High.” The soundtrack closes with two beautiful covers: Meaghan Smith doing The Pixies “Here Comes Your Man” and Zooey doing a slightly longer, though gone too quick, version of “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want.”
